Crystals are in?
I binged Queens Gambit, started following Dionne Warwick on Twitter, and have all the good Schitt´s Creek memes memorized. I thought I was in on all the latest trends. But then, I saw more and more celebrities and people I know IRL posting on their social feeds about crystals.
I decided to learn what all the fuss was about regarding these little rock formations. I reached out to self-proclaimed crystal enthusiast and local mom from Bellevue, Jennifer Valdez. I also happened to attend high school with her, so she was gracious enough to indulge my questioning.
Take a look at our Q&A and consider it your introduction to the crystals. #trending
How would you describe your own history and interest in crystals?
Jennifer said: When I was younger, I would find myself very interested in crystals, especially amethyst. I would go on trips with my grandparents and pick up stones from different areas. My grandmother was a rock collector and would collect stones from every place she would go to visit. I inherited that rock collection after she passed away when I was about 12 years old. This was mostly the beginning of my story and personal introduction to crystals.
Crystals are having a major moment. How would you describe crystal healing?
Jennifer said: It wasn’t until I became an adult and mother that I found the benefits of crystals in healing. I am by no means a doctor, nor would never encourage others to treat diseases or disorders with crystals. But when used along with the guidance of a professional, I do believe there are so many benefits crystals can offer to all.
Jennifer meditates with her crystals and gives these tips:
- Find a quiet place, holding the crystal in your hand
- Close your eyes and focus on the crystal
- You can also try sitting or walking, moving the crystal in your hands
- Focus on specific intentions and desires, for any amount of time that feels comfortable

With many types of crystals, where do you may start with picking one out?
Are there factors to consider other than a personal color preference?
I found out that each crystal has a different meaning. For beginners, the following are often recommended:
- clear quartz – versatile – for healing or for general positive vibes
- rose quartz – symbolizes love and openness in a relationship
- amethyst – known for protection from negative energy, in addition to its very distinct coloring
- citrine – bright and colorful, used for manifesting creativity and prosperity

A simple internet search turned up multiple stores in Omaha for shopping local. Check out Awakenings, Magical Omaha, or Dories Crystals and Things. I imagine the shop owners answer questions from crystal newbies every day, so don’t hesitate to call or stop in to talk about kinds, care, and more.
And there is always Amazon.
Having said that, a lot goes into owning and using crystals—storage and recharging, oh my!
