Natural Ways to Fight the Flu

Disclaimer: This is not medical advice. These are just some ways to try to ease the sting of the flu season at home.

The most dreaded time of the year is rapidly approaching: flu season. It’s horrid and can last days. And worst of all, once one member of your family has it, it’s a matter of time until everyone else starts developing symptoms. We might not be able fully escape the wrath of the flu, but there are certainly some simple things we can do to build up our immune systems, giving ourselves and our bodies a fighting chance. Here are five easy things you can add to your grocery list and keep stocked this flu season:

Vitamin C

This is not earth shattering or new, but fueling your body with some excellent vitamin C can do wonders. Of course you can take a vitamin C supplement, but even better would be to eat some foods rich in vitamin C: green bell peppers, kale, broccoli, strawberries, cauliflower, pineapple, kiwi, and mangoes. Mix it up in a smoothie, eat as a snack, or add it to your dinner plate!

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup is gaining in popularity and for good reason. Elderberries are used to boost immune systems because they’re packed full of antioxidants. Proteins within the syrup destroy the ability of the cold and flu viruses to infect a cell, allowing you to feel better faster. You can find recipes online like this one to make your own, or buy some at a local Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, or Fresh Thyme.

Bone Broth

Bone broth seals and heals your gut and rids your body of parasites and pathogenic bacteria. Buy organic from a local store, or better yet, watch this tutorial and make your own! Use as a base for soups, add in for more flavor on recipes that call for water, or drink it straight – it’s up to you!

Garlic

In addition to being great in recipes, garlic also has a variety of great health benefits. Garlic contains vitamin C, B6, manganese, and selenium – simply put, it gives your immune system a boost. Definitely pungent, it will keep both vampires and the flu away!

Fire Cider

A warming, stimulating blend of herbs in a base of apple cider vinegar is not for the faint of heart, but it contains great antimicrobial and antiviral properties making it a wonderful resource to have on hand this flu season. Check out this recipe to make your own.
